Once better known as Frankie Machine, he was a brutally efficient killer. However, the list of suspects is longer than the California coastline. The Wall Street Journal Graceful. Wonderfully imagined. Winslow s story explodes with. gritty realism. Pittsburg Tribune-Review Smart, staccato. A reading experience of sustained intensity, with appealingly sleazy characters and an Elmore Leonard-like snap in the dialogue. The Plain Dealer "

This was one of the most entertaining books I have read this year for the first 90% of the novel.

Don Winslow is a clever writer and is getting better at his thrillers as time goes by. His book The Power of the Dog was very readable just a little nasty in places and it put me off him a little.

The Winter of Frankie Machine is not nearly as brutal as Dog and it is a fun-filled ride as we get to meet Frank. He is a surfer, bait shop owner, landlord and linen service operator as well as being loving father.

Frank is also a Mob hitman who is trying to stay out of the business now that he is 62. The story centres around the attempt on Frank's life and his search for who from his past could want him dead.

The author's writing style is breezy and enjoyable and I thought the first 90% of the book was great then the last 10% got a little too rushed for my liking, it just seemed to not flow as well as the earlier part of the book did. Maybe I am being too critical.

Top read and I am looking forward to future Winslow books.
